Wien Museum – A Museum for Beethoven

Nov 26, 2017

Vienna has the first true Beethoven museum. Wienmuseum is providing a space that makes Beethoven a tangible person as a citizen of Vienna – a city where he composed, lived, suffered loss of hearing and died. The new Beethovenmuseum brings him back to life at Probusgasse 6, where the famous composer lived some time in 1802 and 1803.

November 25 and 26 are open house days to celebrate the opening. So many visitors! Beethoven would not believe his eyes.

Beethoven – Littrow – Kant

… Das moralische Gesetz in uns, und der gestirnte Himmel über uns…

“nämlich diese zwei Dinge sind es, die den Menschen über sich selbst erheben, und zur ewigen immer steigenden Bewunderung führen. “

Beethoven’s handwritten conversation papers have made it clear that he was reading texts by Johann Joseph Littrow, especially his Cosmological Studies published between 1820 and 1823. He cites Littrow frequently. During that time Beethoven composed such works as the Missa Solemnis. This and later compositions are influenced by Littrow’s thoughts*.
